SILESIAN UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY


The Silesian University of Technology belongs to the largest technical universities in Poland.  It was established as a scientific and didactic base for the most industrialized region in Poland and one of the most industrialized areas in Europe – Upper Silesia.


The Silesian University of Technology was established on 24 May 1945.  Despite the initial plans to locate the university in Katowice, the organizers of the Silesian University of Technology, having familiarized with the location possibilities in the cities of Upper Silesia, chose Gliwice for a seat of the newly established university.


The first inauguration of an academic year of the Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice was held on 29 October 1945.  2750 students commenced their education then. Course plans and syllabuses were based on models taken from the Lviv Polytechnic National University. Also the teaching staff of the Silesian University of Technology in 1945 mainly consisted of professors from the Lviv Polytechnic National University. Excellent professors has been one of the greatest strengths of the Gliwice-based school since its beginnings. 


Today the Silesian University of Technology educates 29 thousand students.  Its scientific and didactic impact spreads over the whole region of Upper Silesia and Zagłębie.  Ten faculties of the Silesian University of Technology are located in Gliwice – the main seat of the school, and the other three – in Katowice and Zabrze.  Furthermore, the university conducts courses in Bytom, Dąbrowa Górnicza, Rybnik, Sosnowiec and Tychy. 
The Silesian University of Technology employs 1900 academic teachers . So far 142 thousand students have graduated from the university .
A great advantage of the Silesian University of Technology is a rich didactic offer and high quality of education.  Courses at the Silesian University  of Technology excellently prepare students to their future carriers, which is confirmed by independent rankings.  The school currently administers 50 courses at 13 faculties . Four courses are conducted in English.


The Silesian University of Technology participates in European programmes of academic exchange. Thanks to this students of this school have a chance to study nearly all over Europe – at one of over 150 universities cooperating with the Silesian University of Technology in this respect.  Over 20 student organizations, over 100 scientific associations and 20 sport sections actively operate at the university, as well as a choir, a musical ensemble, a dance ensemble and a theatre.


The Silesian University if Technology is also an active player in the field of innovations and new technologies, indispensable in the knowledge-based economy.  This is the place where new ideas and solutions come into being, which thanks to their transfer to industry account for the increase of the competitiveness of enterprises.

The task of research, "Development of coal gasification technology for high production of fuels and electricity" funded by the National Center for Research and Development within the strategic program of research and development: "Advanced energy generation technologies".
